Mikhail Matyushenko

I’m a PhD student in Finance at Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business in Montréal. My scientific interests are cryptocurrencies, prediction markets and machine learning in finance.

My path began with International Finance and a Computer Science minor at Özyeğin University in Istanbul, followed by master’s research in Data Science. Alongside academia, I build StudyU, the international education consultancy I co-founded in 2022.

How do we model
the exceptional?

My master’s research asks how generative models represent cryptocurrency risk, with particular attention to rare, extreme market movements.

RESEARCH NOTE

Modelling the tails.

Master’s thesis, Özyeğin University. Successfully defended on 31 July 2026.

Tail-Aware Generative Modelling for Cryptocurrency Risk Management: Non-Monotone Regularisation Effects in Signature-Based GANs

Financial models need to account for extreme movements as well as everyday behaviour. My master’s thesis examined the effect of an asymmetric tail penalty on a Conditional Signature Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Network (SigCWGAN).

The work considers path signatures, the strength of regularisation and cryptocurrency risk, including Value-at-Risk. The question is how changing the training objective affects a model’s representation of the tails.
